Dental sealants protect teeth from cavities by creating a barrier between bacteria-laden plaque and tooth enamel. Back teeth have small “trenches” on their surfaces that can trap food particles. These particles often remain there for a long time because your toothbrush can’t remove them completely. The acids in plaque eventually cause cavities to form.
