Periodontal dentistry includes treatment of periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria destroys gum tissues surrounding teeth. Periodontal disease can also spread to the bone supporting nearby teeth. Through early detection of periodontal disease, it is very treatable and maintained with proper care and routine visits to Dakota Family Dentistry. If a patient does not seek treatment or maintain proper care of periodontal disease, it can result in tooth loss over time. Periodontal disease has also been linked to other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes complications.
One form of treatment for periodontal disease that Dakota Family Dentistry does is laser gum therapy. Laser gum therapy removes the bacteria and plaque from underneath the patient’s gums by using a condensed form of light to remove diseased tissue. Laser gum therapy is a treatment that Dakota Family Dentistry provides that limits discomfort for our patients and has the best results in removing the harmful bacteria beneath gums. Dakota Family Dentistry also offers the more traditional Scale and Root Plane to control gum disease.
